A NIGTH AND DAY THEATER
The House, Art, Scenography and Theater Festival, Fredrikstad. Sept. 2016(in construction). Tasks: Design of Urban installation/ small theater, festival in September 2016.
A night and day theater is an urban installation, that is composed of a small, constructed space which will create an immediate relation between the inside and the outside, and the light condition, whether it is natural or artificial.
The space will be a cube, with movable internal panels, that can be moved and control by users, this change of position will let the light come inside or outside. During the day, the inside space will be lit up by natural light, that comes through the free spaces between the movable panels, while at night, artificial lighting will be placed inside, and the space will function as a urban lamp, letting the light escape to the surroundings. This urban installation aims to be a site specific work and a participative element, in and through which users have the ability to control the light inside and outside, changing both private and public space, and taking advantage of natural light, connecting the inside stage to the outside stage.

Inspired by my first year in Norway, I want to take as a start point the changes in daylight, occurring during the year in Fredrikstad.
Every day, the amount of light changes 6 minutes, amounting to only 5:50 hours of light in December and 18:50 hours June. This is a unique and exciting event, a natural light installation. in tropical countries, like Costa Rica, where day light changes only 30 minutes during the year. This condition affects the way Norwegian life expresses itself, the way public space is being used, energy, artificial lights and sustainability.
In summer months, the acceptance of light becomes the main character(in Costa Rica, we are always looking for shelter from the sun and rain) of urban life, happenings and social activities extend to late hours. While in winter months, artificial light becomes the motor of urbanism and social life, street lights, decorations, architectural lights, add life even in the late hours of night.
Both conditions affect the expression of activities and the amount of time that people attend such events. In summer the outside is the place to be, while in winter, shelter and closeness is all we are looking for. The inside and the outside, day and night, natural and artificial lights. Norway is an expression of dichotomies. This relation between day and night and what it means in urban life is what I would like to explore. September is a month in which the day is almost cut in half, half day of light and half day of darkness.
This project consist in the construction of an urban installation where users can control the amount of light that comes in or comes o
ut.
